#7002 – Gretsch G6120AM – made in Japan – used/2007 – amber flame
£2289
Overview Comments : – In the mid 50’s when Chet Atkins was invited to endorse the Gretsch G6120, little would both parties realise the impact that such a guitar would have, in popular music, over the next 70 years – After all, Chet’s virtuoso playing style, that combines aspect of jazz and country, is vastly different to that of Duane Eddy or Pete Townshend – Yes there have been changes to the original spec, mainly the original DeArmond Dyna- Sonic single coil pick-ups, were replaced with the FilterTron humbucker models a couple of years later – The Duane Eddy model reflects the early version, as does the Eddie Cochran signature model, albeit with a P90 in the neck position – But the orange based finish has been part and parcel of the G6120 for around 70 years now – Granted a few Brian Setzer signature Hot Rod models have been released in various ‘loud’ distinctive finishes – But orange has effectively ruled the waves – So quite unusual to see a used Gretsch 6120AM, with a highly figured maple body and a lush amber flame finish – Part of a small run, from the Professional/Collection series that were Made in Japan – Other than the figure maple body and finish, it is every ounce a G6120 with all the features and spec that you’d expect to see, feel and hear – So if Chet, Duane, Eddie, Neil Young, Pete Townshend or Brian Setzer, or indeed other guitar hero’s, have led you down the path to own a 6120, then read on

Tonal character : – There are enough clips available of Chet Atkins, playing a Gretsch Guitar for you to gather all you need to know about such a guitar, played through a clean sounding amp – Likewise there is no shortage of Brian Setzer clips, to wet your appetite – I’m a big Setzer fan , be it the Stray Cats, his solo work, or indeed his Big Band Albums – As such it shows how the 6120 can move from a warm, jazz based clean tone, to an overdriven voice that rips it up as required – With overdrive, the bridge pick up is tight but not thin – No shortage of attack or dynamics – Whilst it doesn’t sound like a Tele bridge pick-up, it does share similar properties – Riffs, power chords or scorching solos cut thru – Yet the neck pick up is lush and warm with no shortage of clarity, be it for single note work, chord work or walking bass lines etc – Listen to Pete Thownshend and Who’s Next and you can hear how it handles big power chords and riffs – Again it has the power, attack and dynamics that you might hear from a Ricky or Tele – As such the 6120 is certainly not a one trick pony – Granted it won’t do everything, but it is a guitar that will fit into any collection – For some players it may well be the only guitar you need – You can certainly have fun playing it and finding its boundaries
