#6037 – PRS Johnny Hiland Signature Model – blue matteo – used/2007
£1689

My stock book records show that it was over 10 years ago that I was last able to offer a used PRS Johnny Hiland Signature model for sale – The serial number indicate a 2007 date of birth, so time flies by, as I recall selling these brand new, yet that was nearly 20 years ago – The guitar has spent time on my work bench to check the set-up, plus to receive a new set of 10’s, so no issues to concern you ref the set-up – If you’ve heard Johnny play, you’ll be in no doubt whatsoever as to what this guitar is capable of, if as yet you’ve not had this pleasure, then I suggest you click onto ‘Youtube’ search for Johnny Hiland and prepare to be amazed – Covering the rock fusion styles of Satriani, through to jazz/blues and of course some hot country pickin’, so to say he his red hot, is an understatement – The neck has a special JH profile, which leans heavily towards the fast and fluid wide/thin profile, with a thin, satin nitro-cellulose finish to both the neck and fingerboard, to ensure that nice played in feel is present from day one – Fast fluid licks and tricks are just a walk in the park, due to a set of 24 medium jumbo frets, which are impeccably fitted, polished and correctly profiled – All of this, in-conjunction with the ’rounded’ fingerboard edges, leaves you with a neck that has no limitations, allowing you to enhance your playing performance
The natural acoustic tendencies of this instrument are far more lively than many other PRS guitars and as a result of this, when you plug the guitar in, it has a flavour that leans towards the crisp and sparkling character of a Fender, in-part thanks to the characteristics of a bolt-on maple neck – The neck humbucker is full bodied, rich and smooth, with immense clarity, whilst the split coil option is just what you’d expect from a good Strat – The full sounding bridge humbucker is wound a little hotter for improved bite and sustain, hence it’s more than handy when used in overdriven situations with the volume pot around the 10 mark, so back it off a touch, for something that is leaning more towards the Fender camp – I have found a number of customers, often those who are more familiar with playing Fenders, will pass comment that a PRS Custom 22 or 24 may well have a tone that is a touch to dark, certainly more on the Gibson side of life, where as the Johnny Hiland has a far more lively tone, with plenty of snap, that at times leaves you wondering if you actually have a fat sounding Fender in your hands, so much so that the ‘chickin’ pickin’ bite, or twang, rivals that of a good Tele – As with any guitar, this won’t appeal to everyone, but if you are looking for a versatile instrument that can cut it in many applications, then you should check this one out

- Click here to view the review, courtesy of Guitarist Magazine back in 2007
- No factory hang tag, but any relevant data can be found on the bar code label, that you’ll find in the pick up cavity – see relevant pics on this page
- Cool blue matteo finish
- Whole guitar weighs 8lbs and 5oz
- Spec’d with ‘custom wound JH pick-ups – neck measures 7.10K, whilst the bridge is wound a touch hotter to deliver 8.3K
- Master volume + tone pot
- Push/pull option on the tone pot for the neck pick-up – Factory default option is opposite to normal – Dare say this is part of the idiosyncratic nature of any signature model – As such, with the switch in the down position, the neck pick up is in ‘single coil’ mode’ – So lift up the switch to turn to humbucker mode – Factory wiring is no coil tap option on the bridge pick-up – Simple 3 way selector switch as per a Tele
- Wide/thin neck profile measures .823 ” around the top nut end and gently fattens out to .893 around the 12th fret
- Includes a deluxe PRS Artist pack case – case is actually from a deluxe Custom 22/24 artist pack model so sometime in its life the cases have been swapped over – I dare say in error
- Condition wise, this is probably in more of that ‘players grade’ condition – So not a case queen – No lacquer wear to the neck/fingerboard – The frets show barely any hint of wear – A slight hint of wear on the B/G strings, around the first 3/4 frets is barely worth a mention – And if it has taken nearly 20 years to get this worn, then I dare say you’ll have many more years of serious playing before any fret dress is required – Usual tarnish to the nickel hardware, mainly around the bass string saddles and the humbucker covers – The rim of the mahogany body shows a few nicks and bruises – Nothing nasty – Whilst a tour of the gloss finish on the body will show a few nicks here and there – Nothing nasty that resembles that of a Custom Shop Relic Fender – But nevertheless they are there – So as I said earlier, more of a players grade example – Hence the price – I’d be asking close to £2000 for a museum grade clean example
