#6077 – Gibson Les Paul Special – TV Yellow – used/2019 – sold
£1299.00
In Gibson terms the LP Special is about as simple as it gets – No fancy frills – No heirs or graces – So just plug it in and play – An LP Special might not be refined, yet equally it is not a toy or indeed a poor man’s Gibson – They have their own fan club, some of whom are devout followers – For some, an LP Special, might well be the only Gibson you’ll need – For others they are an essential part of any collection – So let me supply you with a whole load of data with regards to this used Gibson Les Paul Special, from 2019, with a classic TV Yellow nitro gloss finish :-
- Not built by the Custom Shop team, as an exact DNA replica of a vintage Special from the mid/late 50’s golden era – Yet it is seriously influenced by the original Single Cut model that Gibson produced from around 1954-59 – At least double the asking price of this LP Special and you’ll just about find a used Custom Shop Replica, if required
- This 2019 model is part of the regular production range, built in Nashville – Complete with the original Gibson brown case, various paperwork/tags
- Whole guitar only weighs 6lbs and 14oz
- Mahogany body + neck
- Bound rosewood fingerboard
- Graph Tec top nut
- Medium jumbo frets
- Nickel hardware including vintage style wrapover bridge/tailpiece
- Kluson style machine heads, with small oval tuning buttons, plus vintage style push in ferrules
- Gibson P90 Soapbar pick-ups – neck measures 7.79K, whilst the bridge measures 7.87K 500K pots
- Orange drop tone caps
- Fat C 50’s neck profile – measures .894″ around the top nut end then fattens out to .994″ around the 12th fret – More of a C profile than D – Chunky but not as fat as some replica models I’ve played
- Condition wise :- As an overview it is an exceptionally clean guitar – First viewing will reveal little signs of use, other than a few pick marks on the scratch plate – Look more carefully on your second tour of the gloss finish and you might find a small nick on the rim of the body – Any additional hint of a graze, or blemish, is subtle at worse – Otherwise it is very clean – Clean frets
- Re-strung with a set of 10-46 gauge strings and set-up with a sensible easy action
Acoustically this LP Special possesses a lively and vibrant character – Plug it in, set-up the amp on the edge of overdrive and just listen to the tone – The bridge pick-up is raw, but in a good way, that instantly sounds right with just enough ‘growl’, muscle, body, bite and depth – Weedy it ain’t – Shin kicker it is – It possesses a strong early 50’s Tele twang to it, that is tight, focused and controlled – Add more gain and it just kicks dirt – Yet you can obtain a wonderful creamy and smooth voice from the neck pick-up, that sounds succulent and lush – On clean amp settings, the neck pick-up can be so chilled out that jazz players love it, yet add overdrive and it sings with a melodic smooth texture – So in many ways you have the beauty and the beast option from a pair of P90 pick-ups – Sometimes the more simple the set-up, the better it sounds and simple describes the LP Special at its best – The volume and tone controls will supply you with enough subtle, yet effective variations, to enrich the guitars tonal qualities – As such you can run them wide open on 10, so as to push the amp hard, or ‘roll them off’ a touch, for a more subtle and polite approach – Hence plenty of soul, expression and emotion in there for you to explore and enjoy – I know they are great for vintage style Muddy Water’s blues and rock ‘n’ roll, but you can also see why they suit the playing styles of the more aggressive punk based bands – Think Green Day etc and hear why big, fat, dirty chords still cut through the mix – I love the culture and quality that a PRS Guitar delivers, but if you want that raw unadulterated vibe, that makes them ideal for rhythm and blues, then P90’s do it better
