This is the original PRS Singlecut model, with a 2001 date of birth, so an early example, as 2001 is also the year the Singlecut model was first launched  – Today some like to refer to it as the Pre-Law Suit model – So if that tag, ties this guitar to a specific era and helps you identify it, or relate to it, then all well and good – However, the Pre-Law Suit tag does not enhance the guitars playing performance, the tonal character, the build quality, or indeed its value by one extra ounce – Pre or Post Law Suit and regarding the original PRS Singlecut model, it is the same guitar – Granted shortly after the court case, then PRS discontinued the original Singlecut model, in favour of a vintage flavoured SC245 and a modern flavoured SC250 – But to me this is the Singlecut model to go for – It is more than capable of applying itself to working in both the vintage and modern camps – So with new USA PRS Guitar escalating in price, then a used original Singlecut model, at £1969 is well worth further investigation – Complete with the correct deluxe PRS case, factory tag and the original warranty card that indicates this was first purchased from Merchant City Music, in Scotland in 2004

Condition wise it is probably fair so say that this Singlecut is not in mint condition – Yet neither has it been abused – You’ll find a couple of nicks on the rim of the body, otherwise any blemish, or compression marks to the shiny gloss finish are subtle – Oxidization to the nickel hardware is par for the course   – Frets are fine and if there is any slight hint of wear then it is not worthy of a mention – So a used PRS that you can play without having to give it the kids glove treatment  – Now fitted with a new set of 10’s, then checked and set up, so it is already to go with a slinky action that will respond to a light touch

The figured maple top possesses plenty of individual character and sits underneath a translucent black cherry finish  – The dot inlays, on the dark rosewood fingerboard, keep the overall vibe simple and stylish, without the usual glitz and glamour – Remember the original Singlecut models are not chambered, so you get the full weight of the one piece mahogany body which adds some girth to the tone – It sits on my digital scales at 10lbs and 13oz – Traditional LP influences continue with a one piece mahogany body and like many PRS Guitars, a 25″ scale length  – Fitted with a complete set of nickel hardware including a set of ‘Kluson’ style non locking tuners, the lightweight, wrap-over bridge tailpiece, that is milled from a single piece of aluminium – Whilst a pair of PRS No.7 humbuckers, complete with nickel silver covers, sit at the heart of the engine room   – The neck pick-up is loaded with those fat, smooth and lush vintage based tones with great articulation and no shortage of output and sustain – Whilst the bridge pick-up is hot and full bodied, with smooth upper mids and highs, plus clear tight lows, that ensures it will be adored by the modern rock player who wants that extra grunt, without losing  any musical warmth – The 25″ scale length ensures that it ideal for any players who wish to drop tune,  as it still remains tight and articulate, so as to allow those big crunching riffs to cut through the mix – The clean tones on either pick-up are warm enough to please those looking to relax and delve into chilled out blues or jazz  licks – But kick on the ‘dirt ‘ channel on your amp, or pedal, for some great rock tones, with vintage flavoured tones oozing out of the neck pick-up and plenty of that throaty bite, sustain and articulation from the bridge pick-up, that makes it excellent  for crunch chord work, riffs and scorching lead work – Both volume pots have a treble bleed capacitor fitted, so that it still retains its clarity as you ‘roll them off’ a touch – This now allows you to set up the amp with some overdrive, then adjust the guitars volume pots for a full on approach, or a softer more chilled out approach, with less gain, yet still preserve the guitars full expressive qualities – As such you and the guitar are in total control of all the emotion, soul and expression that it can deliver

The guitar has been re-strung with 10’s and set-up with a very fluid playing action throughout the length of the 22 fret rosewood fingerboard – The mahogany neck is spec’d with the wide/fat profile, which  instantly feels  comfortable in the palm of your hand – Despite the phrase ‘wide/fat’ it is actually a tad slimmer than most Gibson necks – So enough girth to give substance and aide tone and stability, but not to the extent that it will impede your playing – It measures .880″ around the top nut end, then gently tapers out to .971″ around the 12th fret – With a chunky set of frets, that are correctly profiled and polished to perfection, then string bending is effortless, even with a set of 10’s, whilst a slick action is part and parcel of any PRS Guitar
