Just arrived into stock is a used PRS 305 circa 2009, finished in amber sunburst - Complete with the deluxe PRS case and tags - To a large degree most guitars, regardless of the brand name, follow two schools of design with regards to the physical aspects that the guitars possess and the woods utilised - One school is the mahogany body with a glued in mahogany neck, the other a bolt-on maple neck with an ash or alder body, so from an old school point of view, one is Gibson based and the other is Fender based - For a few years now, PRS have offered versatile models like the 513 and the Swamp Ash, both of which have a strong Fender tendancies, but this is the first time that PRS have fully entered the Fender school with the 305 - Whilst it utilises a glued in neck, the rest of the guitar has taken its influences from the iconic Strat - So we have have an alder body, maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, a 25.5" scale length and 3 single coil pick-ups controlled via a 5 way switch - So now for the player who adores all the aspects of a PRS guitar, playability, build quality and attention to detail, but requires a guitar with the tonal qualities of a Strat, then look no further

From day one, it has always been accepted that the PRS tremelo is the best non-locking package available for both tone and tuning stability thanks to the modern fulcrum design, 6 milled brass saddles, a milled brass tremelo block, the PRS low friction nut along with a set of 14:1 locking tuners - It feels nice and smooth with a very positive feel about it - The neck profile on the 305 is based on the original PRS Standard shape, hence a slightly narrower width on the fingerboard at the top nut, whilst the neck shape itself ensures that this has more of a Strat feel about it compared to other PRS guitars - It feels so delightful to play, with enough depth about it to let you know that you have something of substance in the palm of your hand - The whole playing experience on any PRS Guitar has been paramount to the success that they have achieved, so as you'd expect the 305 continues with this trend - It is so fluid and easy to play, that even with the stiffer 25.5" scale length, plus a set of 10's, you still have a slinky, yet very positive feeling, playing action

Tone is instantly Strat flavoured with plenty of snap and an instantly noticeable responsive attack - But as against saying that the 305 has a superior or indeed inferior tone when directly compared to a Strat, I think it is fair to say that whilst a Strat has a tonal characteristic about it that we are familiar with, the finer detail of that tone depends on so many other factors - Different Fender's, from different eras possess slightly different tones, as do Strats with a rosewood or maple fingerboard - The body, be it swamp ash or alder also has an impact on the tone, as do the windings and or magnets that are utilised on the pick-ups - The 'out of phase' tones on the 305 have a sparkling full bodied 'quack' about them which is so contagious - The neck pick-up is ultra smooth, rich and warm, with immense clarity that is instantly Dave Gilmour, SRV or Little Wing at it's best, with just a tweak required on the tone pot to roll off a few of those shimmering highs to deliver a more chilled out jazz/blues voice - The bridge pick-up has always been a challange on a Strat as so many more affordable versions have a thin tone without any body to it - Like a good Custom Shop Strat, the 305 bridge pick-up has a good blend of body, bite and warmth, so a fuller tone is there for you to enjoy on clean or overdriven amp settings - Depending on your amp set-up the 305 will take you through all the classic Strat-esq tonal spectrum from Hank to SRV, from Clapton to Beck and from Hendrix to Chilli Peppers - All the snap and Strat attack is there with an excellent dynamic response to your how hard or soft you pick each string - I could spend hours discussing the tonal qualities of the 305, but your own test drive will I'm sure reveal the guitars capabilities
