As a guitar junkie, the advantages of running your own guitar business are pretty obvious, so imagine the pleasure that we derive from opening the case and discover a used Hamer Newport Pro BE - We can use the word 'used' lightly as there is very little sign of playing wear, so although the serial number and certificate indicate a 2007 date of birth, the condition of the guitar does not indicate a 5 year old guitar - It is not 100% as new showroom condition, but could easily qualify as a new/ex-display model - Any hint of a graze or indeed a minor minor ding to the top surface of the shiny gloss finish is close to negligible - Re-strung and set-up with a set of 10's and a nice fluid playing action - Complete with the deluxe Hamer case

I always use to think it was a pity that Hamer only made around 2 or 3 guitars a day from their workshop in the USA and as such very few became available in the UK - Yet now it is a big shame that under the ownership of Fender we no longer see any new USA Hamer models - Will this change one day ? - Who knows

The Hamer Pedigree - The internal label simply states 'Hamer handcrafted excellence' and that is just about all you need to know - A small team of dedicated luthiers ensure excellence is par for the course - Product details are as follows:- one piece maple body which is then hollowed out just leaving you with a partial centre block around the bridge/tailpiece area, leaving a true semi-acoustic body, then topped of with a scrumptious solid carved birds eye/figured maple top - Hence no laminates and multiple wood construction to the body as per a 335 - The body, fingerboard and headstock is impeccably fitted with a grained ivoroid binding, leaving no rough edges or lips between the binding and the body - The mahogany neck has a fullish, yet very comfortable neck profile, certainly not in the higher ranks of the clubby league - 22 fret ebony fingerboard, graced with a set of mother of pear victory inlays, whilst the headstock again features a mother of pearl Hamer logo - Hardware includes a set of Grover Imperial tuners, Tone Pros tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece, while the tone is provided by a pair of Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers - Then finally we have that '59 burst' nitro cellulose lacquer which is an art form in itself

Like a Gibson ES335, the Newport Pro BE will lend itself to the Larry Carlton-esq jazz/blues/fusion styles, the traditional 'Lucille' styles as well as the classic r'n'b /rock styles from Cream, all the way through to a good 'top 40' quality covers band - This is undoubtebly a guitar players guitar and the more you play it, the more you realise you can get out of it - Plugging it into an amp and selecting more subtle overdriven amp settings, the quality of the pots will allow you to control the amount of gain on the amp directly from the guitar, yet with no deterioration in tonal quality, it just cleans up nicely - On clean or overdriven amp settings the tone is just fat, warm, smooth and lush with excellent top end sparkling highs, with no hint of any aggressive nasal tone - There are a lot of good quality guitars for sale in this price range and this delightful Newport Pro BE has instantly risen to the upper reaches of the leaderboard
