Here are the spec and details when we first listed this in stock as a new instrument
A custom spec'd and custom order Tom Anderson Classic finally arrives - Go back to 1968 and a certain San Fransico cop, called Bullitt, played by Steve McQueen, gave us all the pleasure of one of the finest car chases in cinema history, that is still talked about today - Click here and you can view the whole 10 minutes and 53 seconds of this chase once again and again - Note the 1968 Ford Mustang 390CID Fastback finished in 'highland green' driven in most of the chase by Steve himself - Around Feb 2009 I first heard that Tom Anderson where going to pay homage to this magical movie moment and offer this finish on select models - Simply known as 'Bullitt Green' - I could not resist the temptation - So instead of 325 brake horse power under the bonnet, we have 3 delightful VA7 single coil pick-ups
Let's hit you first with all the full spec deatils of this classic instrument :- Alder body, finished all over in bullitt green - Hard rock maple neck, with a rosewood fingerboard and a matching 'bullitt green' headstock facia - Thin satin finish, slightly tinted, on the rear of the neck - 22 medium/chunky frets - chrome hardware - Vintage tremelo system + locking tuners - White pearloid scratchplate - VA7, VA7R and VA7+ singlecoil pick-ups with the switchable VA Booster option (via the mini toggle switch) and a push/pull option on the tone pot to add the bridge and neck pick-up togethher - The influences behind this instrument are obvious, so there is no overall discussion to be had with regard to what this instrument is capable of achieving - What makes it so special is all in the hidden detail, hence it is more about how it plays, feels and sounds that makes it so magical - If you are not into 'aged' Fender Custom Shop Strats or require a Strat that has the fluid playability of modern instruments, like PRS, Suhr and indeed Anderson themselves, then you owe it to yourself to check out this Anderson Classic
Anderson offer different neck profiles, so whilst we will happily quote you for your own custom ordered and built creation, this Classic was spec'd with a 60's vibe including the 1 5/8" nut width, so the neck is straight from the early 60's Fender period - Yet this is where the skill levels of Anderson and his small team of luthiers start their pursuit of perfection, as this guitar feels so slick and fluid to play - The fret work is of the highest calibre, so string bending is both controlled and effortless, so much so that a set of Elixir 10's, as supplied by Anderson, feels very slinky, hence I dare say some players may well try a set of 11's for a stiffer feel - Sure you can dig into some traditional blues based licks, but The Classic is designed and built to ensure that there are no barriers to get in the way of the relationship that you have between yourself and the guitar, which in turn allows you full emotional control over every aspect of your playing, from cascading licks and tricks, to soulful melodic phrases
The heart of the tone department is there to enrich every last meaningful and well chosen note that you have chosen to play, no matter if you have set the amp up for clean, subtle blues overdrive or hi-gain rock - The VA7 pick-ups represent the finest vintage based pick-ups that Anderson offer - Wound to be full and lush with sweet soothing highs that have a soft yet shimmering or sparkling quality to them, hence they are about as far away as possible from the harsh brittle single coil tones that many inferior models have - Lows are full, clear and detailed, whilst the warm mids are lovingly squeezed out of every note that you caress or attack - The sonic personality of the Classic is down to you and how you wish to play, as the guitar will respond to your needs - For greater versatlity the visible mini toggle switch controls the VA Booster - It's simply a passive circuit that Anderson offers as an optional extra on many models, yet I believe is a 'must have' item on such guitars as The Classic - Unlike the battery powered mid boost circuit on the Clapton signature models, that has a variable boost level, the Anderson VA Booster, is simply on/off, fairly subtle yet very effective - In short it allows the guitar to have fuller bodied qualities, similar to those found on a 60's based Strat with increased mids, loved by the likes of Stevie Ray, or move the switch to position b) for less mids and the sparkling 50's based tones that you associate with the likes of Clapton and Johnson
You've may well have spent years perfecting your art as a guitarist, or indeed like many of us today, you are a guitar enthusiasts who fully appreciates the finer qualities that only guitar builders like Anderson can offer - Either way, If it was me, I'd be off like a bullet to give it a test drive - Anderson have not re-invented a classic design, rather they have just honed it to perfection - Just as a final comment, Anderson make less than a 1000 guitars a year, that is less than Fender make in one whole month at the Custom Shop facility and still less in a year than the total quantity of Fender Master Built models, so for a guitar that costs less to purchase than a Master Built instrument, yet is only a fraction more than the cost of a good Relic Strat, value for money does not seem to be so bad after all
