PRS SC58 Faded McCarty Sunburst - new low price
#4001 - £2,799

New Low Price - now £2799
We have just managed to secure an extra special deal on a couple of PRS SC58 models, finished in a classic faded McCarty sunburst finish and note the gold hardware on this example which would normally add an additional £325 to the price - In this case no extra charge - Previously these guitars have sold around £3899, so to acquire two excellent examples at £3199 has to be good news
In 1958 Gibson launched the sunburst Les paul Standard and whilst it was not initially accepted by guitar players, it later became one of the most iconic of all the electric guitars - At the same time a certain Paul Reed Smith was barely walking, so no one could have foreseen the influence we would have on the guitar industry over the last 25 years - So now we move on over 50 years and at the PRS Experience 2010 event, the SC58 is introduced to the guitar world
Yes we all know where the influence for the PRS SC58 has come from, but in true Paul Reed Smith manner, the pursuit of excellence, coupled with impeccable attention to detail, ensures a modern masterpiece is born - As Paul himself stated ' this is the guitar I would have launched in 1958 if I was not still wearing nappies' - Look at it, touch it and play it and that classic and seductive styling is obvious, as are the fat, warm and smouldering tonal qualities, whilst a detailed tour of every curve and contour will reveal a build quality that only PRS can deliver - All this adds up to a fine instrument that is fine tuned to perfection to deliver the ultimate playing performance - We've all heard for years the various comments regarding the big G brand's build quality, finish flaws and a cumbersome playing performance, yet for all the faults the tone is legendary - Well all I can say as a response to that, is check out the PRS SC58, as it possesses all the qualities that inspire
As usual PRS have not let us down in the visual department as that 'artist pack' graded maple top carries all the hallmarks of a vintage model with the new V12 faded McCarty sunburst finish, so it is not hard to see why the new style bird inlays fly south down the bound rosewood fingerboard for a closer look at the scenery - The finish should both enhance the visual status of the guitar, as well as allowing the guitar to 'breathe' so as not to hinder the natural resonance - The new V12 finish is the result of a 12 year journey - It's ultra thin, yet still possesses that famous PRS ultra gloss glass like appearance as it blends the vintage nitro based lacquers, with the harder more modern acrylic paints to ensures it feels like a nice old guitar, but will preserve its beauty for many years to come - The V12 finish also covers the hand selected solid mahogany body and neck, so no acoustic chambers on the SC58, just solid wood through out - The rosewood headstock facia features an inlaid PRS signature whilst the new style bird inlays comprise a mother of pearl outline, with a paua heart centre
As with the PRS SC245, the SC58 retains the 'vintage' format with a 24.5" scale length and 22 medium jumbo frets, which both enhances the tone and feel - The SC58 now features the new 'pattern neck shape' which is an 'updated' version of the best selling wide/fat neck - Paul always believes a guitar should feel comfortable and 'home territory' as soon as you pick it up, with the neck being paramount to that connection - It has a comfortable amount of girth to it which enriches tone and sustain, but not to the point whereby it is a challange to play - With 22 medium/jumbo frets, a 10" radius, the bound mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard is slick and fluid to play, whilst controlled string bending feels effortless - Strung and set-up with a set of 10's, it feels nice and slinky to further enhance the playing performance
The new PRS two piece bridge and tailpiece comes as standard on the SC58 - The bridge plays a crucial role both regards to tone as well as transmitting all the string vibration and energy into the body to enhance the natural resonance of the wood - The combination of solid/milled brass and aluminium (note, no monkey metal here) further enhances the tone and sustain
Finally we come to the pick-ups and how what other option would you expect other than the renowned PRS 57/08 humbuckers - Fat, rich, warm and smooth with silky smooth highs and clear lows - The bridge pick-up can growl and bite for those boogies style driving riffs and power chords, but add some gain on your amp for those screaming hot solos with endless sustain - On clean amp settings, the neck pick-up instantly has you delving into chilled out jazz/blues chords as it is so lush, so add some overdrive for those smouldering and moody fat blues licks - The volume and tone controls work well across the whole 1-10 range and as you back off on the pots a touch, the guitar will still retain its expressive qualities - This ensures that you can set up the amp on an overdrive setting, roll off the volume pot until you find that magical sweet spot for a softer clean tone, hence unlimited soul and emotion is available at the end of your fingertips
