The Dave Grissom model (DGT) is a result of 20 years collaboration between 2 fine guitar enthusiasts - On one hand you have Paul Reed Smith, the master guitar builder (as well as a talented guitarist) whilst on the other hand you have Dave Grissom (a renowned USA session guitarist who has toured and recorded with the likes of Dixies Chicks, Allman Brothers and John Cougar Mellencamp) - The DGT is based on the established McCarty model with a maple top perched upon a thicker mahogany body and decked out with the new V12 finish - You still have the regular PRS 25" scale length, but now the one piece mahogany neck has a new DGT neck shape, whilst the rosewood fingerboard is impeccably fitted with Dunlop 6100 chunky frets and set-up with a set of 11's, again a spec that is unique to the DGT model (more on this below) - Unlike the McCarty model, the DGT is installed with the PRS modern fulcrum tremelo system, complete with solid brass bridge saddles and tremelo block - Note the super smooth PRS 14:1 ratio low mass locking tuners are fitted with faux ivory tuning buttons, new brass tuning posts and grommet style push in bushings, very reminiscent of the vintage period Gibsons that utilised Klusons - The headstock facia features the regular PRS logo, along with an engraved DGT truss rod cover

At the heart of the tone department you now have a set of custom wound and voiced PRS Dave Grissom humbuckers, with satin finished covers - Now controlled via 2 volume pots, a tone pot with push/pull coil tap option and a traditional 3 way selector switch

DGT performance characteristics
The new DGT model has 3 great attributes - The first is more obvious and that is its visual appearance - The next 2 attributes you will not be aware of, until you actually pick it up and play it - The DGT neck profile is an absolute peach and the tone is just something to die for and if you take it from me, that that is gospel, then there is not much more we need to tell you - However I'll wet your appetite just a touch more - Compared to most other PRS models and certainly Gibson LP's, the DGT has a neck profile that has a slightly slimmer top nut width, yet retains a comfortable amount of depth, but more importantly it feels and plays just right - The fingerboard is fitted with 22 'Dunlop 6100' size frets that are somewhat more chunky than the frets PRS use on other models - Whilst the guitar is set-up with a set of 11's, as per Dave Grissom's personal requirements, the combination of the neck shape and the frets, results in the guitar feeling more like you are still playing a set of 10's - I was staggered on first playing some pre-production models, at the PRS Experience event in October 2007, with the ease of playability that is associated with this guitar when set-up with 11's - You still retain the slinky, easy playing, fluid action that PRS are renowned for, yet I dare say that some players will still favour a set of 9's or 10's, but the tone freaks will adore the feel and tone that results from using 11's

Now lets look at the tone available to you from the DGT guitar - Dave's challange was to find the tone for the DGT model that he was able to achieve from many late 50's or early 60's Gibsons, that are fitted with PAF humbuckers, in particular his early 335 - Hour upon hour, trying many different humbuckers, tweaked with extra windings, less windings, different magnets, whether dipped in parafin or wax, has resulted in the birth of the Dave Grissom humbuckers, which are now exclusive to this guitar - The result is the most lush, velvet smooth and full bodied humbucker tone I have probably ever encountered, with ES335 style articulation coupled with incredible sustain - On clean amp settings the tone is early Pete Green through and through - Increase the gain settings on your amp from a subtle overdriven blues based level, through to a higher Gary Moore and Bonamassa based gain setting and you'll be licking your lips with joy - The articulation from these humbuckers allows you to hear each note of a chord, even with more complex jazz based inversions and allows jazz/blues/fusion licks to flow so freely with good note separation

Granted, this is maybe not the guitar for the modern hi-gain thrash speed metal heads who want more bite, but for blues/rock players it is a definitive must have - Other deviations from regular PRS models includes 2 volume controls and a master tone pot - This now allows you to blend the neck and bridge humbuckers when the 3 way switch is set on the centre position, a feature that many players love to use - Furthermore the tone pot has a push/pull coil tap option to deliver some very useful single coil tones, resulting in some very good country style twang settings - Finally Dave has been playing various pre-production prototype models for a number of months, for both studio and stage work, yet when offered the chance to try and play the first 8 'off the shelf models', he picked one that has now become his main instrument - Therefore that means that one of the USA's finest hired hands actually plays the same 'off the shelf' guitar that is now available for you to buy
