Sometimes, I need to buy another guitar for stock like I need a hole in the head - I had already purchased 3 or 4 Artist V models and sold a couple, so was more than happy to leave it at that - Then it all changed - The PRS UK office sent me a pic of this PRS Artist V, finished in eriza verde and instantly I knew it was coming to sit in my showroom - Hopefully for a short period -Does it get much better than this
In the days long before the birth of the PRS Private Stock models, Paul needed an outlet to offer for sale a premium grade guitar that was a cut above the regular models - Exotic wood samples lurking around his small factory, along with fresh and exciting ideas, required a guitar that would reflect Paul's vision and guitar building skills - As such, in 1991 the first Limited Edition Artist 1 model was born - Over the next 5 years, or so, the Artist 11, Artist 111 and Artist 1V appeared, all limited edition models, each slightly different, but all truly stunning instruments, with regard to their visual appearance as well as tonal qualities and playing performance - Some of the features found on the Artist models, eventually became part of the PRS production line models - We then had to wait around 15 years for the next model in the series, so 2011 sees the launch of the PRS Artist V
Part of a very special limited run of only 300 guitars, with only around 20 destined for the UK

PRS offered a few best selling colours for the Artist V models, but we chose the new colours, so in this instance we have a very seductive eriza verde finish - Note that all new PRS guitars now feature the V12 finish - A thin finish that allows the guitar to 'breathe' and resonate, yet retains the 'glass' like appearance that PRS have made their own - It is a blend of old and new, nitro and acrylic
As usual the PRS neck feels comfortable and with a slick playing action it instantly feels at home - The pattern regular neck profile has a comfortable amount of girth to it, which will enhance tone and sustain, but not feel chunky - The fingerboard/top nut width is a touch over 42mm, so as such, puts it in to the 'nice Fender Strat neck territory' - An ebony fingerboard on any PRS guitar is a very rare experience so I'm sure to some players, it will be a very welcome and maybe long over due option - Set-up with a set of 10's and a fluid playing action that still allows for effortless string bending
As usual, Paul has kept the finer details of the pick-ups as a trade secret, so out with the meter and we clocked 9k for the neck and 10k for the bridge, so that puts them in the vinatge warm category, with just a touch of extra 'juice' - A quick test drives reveals a very open tone, very warm with excellent clarity and excellent string separation - Very full, with clear tight lows, shimmering highs and no mushy mids - Roll off the tone and volume pots a touch for a softer darker voicing for those chilled out moments - Overall it is very expressive with lots of character, soul and emotion, whilst the nature of the ebony fingerboard ensures it has a quick and responsive attack to each note - The single coil voices are Strat influenced and very effective and certainly not those thin weedy coil tap options that are found on many coil tapped humbuckers - As a guitar to play, it is certainly in the outside lane with regards to its playing performance and tonal qualities, with its film star looks it is certainly front page material for the monthly glossy mags and these two qualities make it a lethal combination - Ceratinly for a short while you'll see 2 or 3 for sale, and yet in 5 or 10 years time you'll wonder where they all went to as they no longer appear on the market, for sale
